چکیده

The fate of nitrogen entering Long Island Sound Embayments is dependent on both volume of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and geochemical transformations in the coastal aquifer. Previous work in Stony Brook Harbor revealed the importance of sediment composition in the subtidal and offshore areas of the harbor; SGD rate in the subtidal is higher than offshore areas, but experiences only 30-50% denitrification when compared to low SGD rates offshore that undergo 80-100% denitrification. In this study, SGD nitrogen loading to Port Jefferson is examined on the harbor wide scale using a combination of porewater profiles in the coastal aquifer, porewater nitrogen sampling in the subtidal zone and 222 Rn surves. We find nitrate rich groundwater entering Port Jefferson Harbor via shoreline SGD contributes 19 29.4 kg-NO3 -N d -1 , in excess of inputs from Port Jefferson Sewage Treatment Plant which average 12.2kg-Nd -1 . This finding illustrates the importance of accounting for SGD when determining total nitrogen loading to harbor water. To accurately model SGD nitrogen loading to harbors, data refinement is required to address variation in both SGD rates and groundwater nitrate concentration.

Submarine Groundwater Discharge ( Sgd ) Extrapolation for Port Jefferson Harbor

Groundwater typology is a method which is intended to address the relative lack of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) data on a global basis. On the local scale, a typology was developed for Port Jefferson Harbor with the ultimate goal of scaling nitrates additions to the Long Island Sound. SGD measurements at one location in the south-east side of the Harbor were extrapolated around the sho...

Fate of nitrogen during oxic submarine groundwater discharge into Stony Brook Harbor, Long Island, NY

Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) nutrient fluxes from un-sewered suburban landscapes pose a significant eutrophication risk to coastal waters. In unconsolidated coastal aquifers, nutrients recharged to groundwater undergo diffuse discharge to the coastline during SGD. Defining pathways of nutrient attenuation is required for land management professionals to take effective nutrient remediat...

Coupled radon, methane and nitrate sensors for large-scale assessment of groundwater discharge and non-point source pollution to coastal waters.

We constructed a survey system of radon/methane/nitrate/salinity to find sites of submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) and groundwater nitrate input. We deployed the system in Waquoit Bay and Boston Harbor, MA where we derived SGD rates using a mass balance of radon with methane serving as a fine resolution qualitative indicator of groundwater. In Waquoit Bay we identified several locations of...

Assessment of groundwater discharges into West Neck Bay, New York, via natural tracers

A field experiment to compare methods of assessing submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) was held on Shelter Island, NY, in May 2002. We evaluated the use of radon, radium isotopes, and methane to assess SGD rates and dynamics from a glacial aquifer in the coastal zone. Fluxes of radon across the sediment-water interface were calculated from changes in measured surface water inventories followi...
